Stewardship

Being outside makes us healthy.

Connection means to care.

It shows in the balance;

                           how do we take, how do we give?

How do we interact with nature, and each other?                                                ...It's all the same thing.

 A trail is a pathway to connection, to walk in peace with our surroundings and learn its sounds, smells and of the abundance of life in many the forms. We are a part of it, and as a community our strength lies in that connection. Among all the people who call Ketchikan home, the nature is our commonality and our true bond to each other and all things.

Stewardship is about more than how we use our trails but how we care for them.  It takes a lot of effort to maintain trails in a temperate rain forest, and KORTC is working towards a status which will allow us join along side the USFS and Ketchikan Borough to support existing efforts. KORTC will develop a volunteer corps and train various levels of trail maintainers. With a community effort much of the work required to maintain our existing trails is easily managed. Brushing trails for instancane, can be done by the hikers who use that trail, spending 20min on their hike to cut back brush.  honors this connection by caring for these lands through the Maintenace and thoughtful Development of trails and other Outdoor Recreation opportunities. We hope to foster a greater presence stewardship in Ketchikan's outdoor community by creating volunteer opportunities and establishing KORTC as a leader in Trail Maintenance on our island. We understand this means serving a diversity of outdoor uses, agencies, and groups and KORTC is dedicated to representing the commonalities among them all.

We are advocating for balance between community access commercial enterprise. Access to outdoor recreation is vital to our quality of life in Alaska. KORTC hopes to inspire and facilitate participation among our community to bring about cooperation and work towards a shared vision of Ketchikan's outdoor recreation.
